According to reports, BBMP has not only imposed fine on the contractor, but has also suspended the concerned health officer.
Perhaps the first time ever to do so, Bengaluru's civic body Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has imposed a hefty fine on a garbage contractor, for dumping waste in the Bellandur lake.
Sangeeta Bora reports for The New Indian Express that the BBMP has not only imposed a fine on the contractor, but has also suspended the concerned health officer.
BBMP Commissioner Manjunath Prasad confirmed to The News Minute that the fine was imposed on Wednesday, in accordance with the penalty introduced after the NGT order issued on April 19.
In its order, the NGT had pulled up the civic body for its failure in maintaining the lake and preventing the frequent frothing of the lake. "Following the NGT order, we introduced the Rs 5 lakh penalty and we caught this garbage contractor Ramachandra red-handed on Wednesday," the commissioner said.
Soon after the NGT order, BBMP had installed CCTV cameras near the Bellandur lake in an attempt to prevent garbage and construction debris recklessly dumped on the lake.
Earlier on Monday, the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) had started removing weeds from the Bellandur lake.
Taking a tough stance against the polluting industries near the lake, the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) on Wednesday ordered closure of 30 polluting industries around the Bellandur lake.
